Baptist Health is a leading healthcare provider in the Jacksonville, Florida area. The Baptist Health organization consists of five major hospitals and outpatient clinics, as well as, numerous physician offices. They are licensed for 1,582 beds and have over 7,000 employees, 6,400 PC's, and 7,200 telephone extensions.

Schmidt Consulting Group, Inc. developed a long term Technology Infrastructure Plan for Baptist’s five main facilities. The goal of the plan was to improve the flexibility, functionality, redundancy and reliability for communications systems. As Baptist migrates to a full electronic medical record, the reliability of communications systems becomes increasingly critical. SCG began by investigating the different existing communications systems and then combining these findings with our knowledge of proven and future technologies to plan an improved infrastructure for the facilities.

Our scope of work for this technology plan encompassed several parts:

  • First, we documented the existing Communications infrastructure for the various buildings, providing an assessment of the current state of the facilities’ communications closets and riser systems.
  • Secondly, we addressed alternatives for new or renovated communications infrastructures as the systems required. This included alternatives for the construction of new communications closets, the addition of new copper and fiber riser systems, and the upgrade/replacement of horizontal cabling.
  • Next, we addressed upgrade and migration plans for these alternatives with the different technology systems. The plan analyzed different implementations and their related costs. We also addressed technology design and space planning guidelines for all new and renovation projects. Future renovations and construction projects must be designed with all the various current and future technologies in mind.
  • We then provided typical construction design guidelines and specifications for future projects.

This long-term technology plan will serve as a blueprint for future planning and development of facilities through FY2010. As with any long-term plan, this technology plan will need to be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with the institution's mission and goals, to identify appropriate adjustments that may arise during the course of implementation, and to address new or emergent issues and trends in the larger healthcare or IT environment.
